British Sign Language

At Roding Primary School, we are proud to have a small number of deaf children who are an integral part of our school community. To ensure we are an inclusive and supportive environment for all, every child at Roding learns British Sign Language (BSL) as part of our school curriculum.

BSL is the official sign language of the Deaf community in the UK and is a visual language with its own grammar and sentence structure, completely different from spoken English. By learning BSL, our students not only develop a new skill but also foster an inclusive environment where all children, regardless of hearing ability, can communicate and build friendships.

We believe that teaching BSL enriches our school culture and ensures that every child can fully participate in school life. It also helps raise awareness and understanding of the Deaf community, reinforcing our values of respect and inclusion.
