September Newsletter 2024

A huge welcome from me, the Headteacher at Roding Primary School! For those of you who do not know me, I’ve had the pleasure of working at Roding for almost seven years.

I began as the Deputy headteacher seven years ago before becoming Co-Headteacher two years ago, and now, I am incredibly proud to serve as the full-time Headteacher of this wonderful and inclusive school. I’m also excited to share that we’ve appointed a full-time Deputy Headteacher, Mr. Cogan, but you’ll read more about him later!

Welcome back to the new school year! It’s been fantastic to see how well the children have settled in. I’m especially pleased to see so many of them in full school uniform, proudly representing our community. This year, we have introduced six new core values that embody everything we hope our children will become: Resilience, Compassion, Independence, Curiosity, Respect, and Ambition. We invite you to join us in living these values, setting good examples for the children both on-site and in the wider school community.

Last week, we celebrated National Teaching Assistants’ Day, recognising our amazing Teaching Assistants who go above and beyond to support the children. Whether it’s helping with learning, providing a cold wet wipe for a scraped knee, offering comfort, or helping a child overcome a hurdle, their dedication is invaluable. This Friday, we’ll be celebrating our wonderful teaching staff, who also work wonders with our children every day.

Finally, a gentle reminder to keep an eye out for our events calendar, which is sent out every couple of weeks, so you don’t miss any of the exciting activities and events planned for this term.

Warm regards,

Ms M Nwankiti

Headteacher

Roding's SIX Core Values

At Roding Primary, we believe that fostering strong values is essential to the development of our pupils. Our core values of compassion, independence, ambition, resilience, and respect guide everything we do and help shape well-rounded, confident individuals. Here’s what each value means to us:

Compassion: We teach children to care for others, show kindness, and understand the importance of empathy. We believe that by being compassionate, our pupils will build strong, positive relationships and create a supportive school community.

Independence: We encourage children to think for themselves, make decisions, and take responsibility for their actions. Developing independence helps them grow into confident individuals who can face challenges with confidence and make thoughtful choices.

Ambition: We want our pupils to aim high and set goals for themselves, both academically and personally. By fostering ambition, we help them to develop a growth mindset, understanding that hard work and dedication lead to success.

Resilience: Life is full of challenges, and resilience is key to overcoming them. We teach children that mistakes and setbacks are part of learning, and that perseverance helps them grow stronger and more capable in the face of adversity.

Respect: Respect for others, their opinions, and their differences is fundamental to a positive school environment. We emphasise the importance of treating everyone with dignity, creating a culture where all individuals feel valued and heard.

Curiosity: We cultivate a love of learning by encouraging children to ask questions, explore ideas, and be curious about the world around them. This value helps ignite their creativity and critical thinking skills, fostering a lifelong desire to learn and discover.

These values are woven into the fabric of our school life, helping our pupils grow into caring, confident, and capable individuals. We appreciate your support in reinforcing these values at home as part of our shared mission.

A huge congratulations to Safa, who recently competed in a Karate competition in Ilford and brought home both a bronze and a silver medal! Safa proudly shared her success during assembly and expressed her excitement about competing again next year. We at Roding are incredibly proud of her ambition and resilience in pursuing this sport, and we have no doubt she will continue to excel in future competitions! Well done, Safa!

STAFF SPOTLIGHT - MR COGAN

I am excited to introduce myself as the new Deputy Headteacher. With nearly 20 years of experience in education, I have had the privilege of teaching across almost every year group and leading multiple subjects. Throughout my career, I have worked in several high-performing schools, which have instilled in me a strong foundation in excellent teaching practices and a deep understanding of how pupils learn best. The vast majority of my career has been spent in Tottenham, an area I hold dear to my heart not just because of my professional ties, but also because I am a passionate Tottenham Hotspur fan!

I am particularly passionate about professional development and dedicated to enhancing teaching techniques and strategies. I enjoy collaborating with staff to share current educational practices, ensuring that we continually grow and improve as educators. I firmly believe that sharing knowledge and experiences strengthens our school community and benefits our students immensely.

On a personal note, I have a young family that keeps me busy outside of work. My son has recently started Reception, and it has been a joy to experience education from a parent's perspective. This journey has given me a renewed respect for our dedicated teachers. It is truly an honour to be entrusted with the education and personal growth of children, and I take this responsibility very seriously.

In my free time, I have a few hobbies that I thoroughly enjoy. I collect vintage Spider-Man comics—a costly and addictive passion that brings me great joy! Additionally, I love to travel and explore new sights and cultures around the world. These experiences have enriched my life and broadened my understanding of the diverse world we live in.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff, students, and parents for the incredibly warm welcome I have received during my introduction to the school. It is clear to me that Roding Primary is a very special place, filled with a sense of community and support. I am genuinely excited about the journey ahead and look forward to working closely with all of you to continue fostering a nurturing and inspiring environment for our students.

Thank you for your support, and I am excited to be part of the Roding Primary family!

Thank you so much for working with us to ensure your child’s attendance.

Your efforts have made a big difference in reducing lost learning time, and we truly appreciate your commitment to supporting their education.

Last academic Year, the attendance at Roding was higher than Redbridge's overall attendance and broadly in line with national attendance. This is a HUGE achievement for the school and for the children.

If your child has a morning medical appointment, please ensure they return to school in the afternoon. If your child has a medical appointment in the afternoon, then you need to ensure that your child attends school in the morning and then is collected from school.

The school will not authorise absence if medical appointments are scheduled for part of the day.

We are about to enter the winter season, which brings occasional coughs and colds.

To try and prevent your child from catching coughs and colds, we recommend that children come to school appropriately dressed for the winter weather conditions. Please also encourage your child to wash their hands to prevent germs from spreading.

Please click the link here for some guidance from the NHS around coughs and colds.
