May Newsletter 2024

Dear families,

Welcome back! I hope you all had a restful and enjoyable half-term break. As we return to school, we're looking forward to the final stretch before the summer holidays.

Despite the unpredictable weather, let's remain hopeful for more sunshine and brighter days ahead. The children have returned with renewed energy and enthusiasm, ready to embrace the learning and activities planned for the final half-term.

As the new full-time Headteacher, I am delighted to share with you the incredible dedication and effort our pupils have displayed this past month. With assessments taking place just before the break and continuing for the duration of June, I have witnessed first hand the resilience and determination each child has shown in their learning. Their hard work is truly commendable, and I am immensely proud of their achievements.

Thank you for your continued support and encouragement. Together, we create a nurturing and thriving environment for our children to excel.

Warm regards,

Ms M Nwankiti

Do not forget to check out the UPDATED school events calendar which will be emailed to you soon.

Mr Albert

Teacher of the Year – Primary School Finalist and WINNER

What was said about Mr Albert:

I want to tell you about my amazing teacher, Mr. Albert. He's not just a teacher; he's like a superhero in the classroom. Mr. Albert has this magical way of making English fun and exciting. Before, I used to struggle with it, but now, thanks to him, it's like a cool adventure every day. Mr. Albert is not just about books; he created a new thing called shared reading. It's like a special club where we explore awesome books together. He even made me feel brave enough to share my thoughts in class. I used to be shy, but now I raise my hand and say what's on my mind. What's really cool is that when I'm worried, Mr. Albert is like a problem-solving wizard. He works super hard to make everything okay. And guess what? He's not only serious; he's funny too! There's a time for jokes, and there's a time to be serious, and Mr. Albert is both. It's like having a teacher and a comedian all in one. At the end of the day, we have this fantastic thing called book club. We share our favourite books, and it's the best part of my day. I wish every kid could have a teacher like Mr. Albert because he's not just a teacher; he's a friend who makes learning awesome!

As part of Deaf Awareness Week, this week, we are raising money for Sophie and Chloe’s Special Ears Foundation to say thank you for all the support they have given us.  Last year they gave every child in the school a Deaf Friendly Book. They also gave us all the BSL sign boards you can see in our playgrounds.  This week they will be paying for Ruth Montgomery, a Deaf musician, to give all the children in Nursery, Reception, Year One and Year Two a music lesson.  We are very grateful to the charity for all the support they have given us.  Please come along and buy a cake or samosa to enjoy, and help us raise money for the charity.

When: Wednesday 5th June 2024

Time: 3pm

Where: Top Playground

Meanwhile, 13th May 1921

Notice has been received that some standard 5 boys who cannot obtain admission elsewhere can be admitted here but as there is a large number going to Canada on June 1st it is thought advisable to wait before expending money buying the necessary materials for a few standard 5 boys who might then probably find an opening in other schools. The school closed today for a week's holiday.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT - MRS YATES

Hello everyone! My name is Miss Yates and for the last three years, I've had the incredible privilege of working with the most amazing children and teachers at Roding Primary School. I first started at Roding working in Year One as a Student Teacher and quickly fell in love with my new career in teaching. Starting my journey into the world of primary education at 30 years old has been both exciting and rewarding. Currently in Year Two, the best part of my job is interacting and teaching children in the early stages of their academic development and being a part of some of their first steps in learning.

There's something very fulfilling about seeing children learn a new concept, demonstrate strong resilience, ask questions that ignite curiosity and develop their understanding in a topic. I strive to create a nurturing, supportive environment where each child feels valued, heard and understood. I love celebrating their academic and personal growth and seeing children build confidence, compassion and critical thinking skills.

Coupled with my positions as classroom teacher and Roding Science subject lead, I had previously gained multiple years of experience in competitive marketing and sales industries. From my previous career, I have taken with me various transferable skills which now contribute to my identity as a teacher and member of the school team. It has also supported my role as Staff Governor. Working within the Roding community has allowed me to ensure that children can develop a positive attitude and enthusiasm for learning, engage in a varied and impactful curriculum and feel safe. Becoming a governor at Roding has allowed me to vocalise my experiences and expertise as class teacher and collaborate within our wider community to, exercise our responsibility which supports teaching and learning within the school. This shared knowledge helps create and build on a strategy to further develop Roding’s future, something that I find so interesting and am very proud of.

Though known to the children as ‘Miss Yates,’ I actually got married last August to the love of my life. We have the friendliest and most sociable cat called Keith and live in a flat in Hackney. We are also currently expecting the most beautiful gift, our first child! Our baby girl is due in September and we are absolutely thrilled.  When I’m not teaching, I’m probably visiting friends and family, listening to music, tending to my plants, or walking around our local parks with a coffee! Though I’ll be taking a break next year to look after our new baby, I look forward to continuing my journey as a primary class teacher and there’s nothing else I’d rather be doing. Every day is a new page in my story at Roding and no two days are the same! Here’s to many more chapters of learning, growing, and teaching!

Learning in the Spotlight - Deaf Provision Bake Off

Who doesn’t like a spot of baking? Well, the children in the Deaf Provision certainly do. Many of our pupils and staff took part in a “DP Bake-Off”. It proved to be a whole morning of creative fun as our pupils made biscuits and cookies aplenty. Mr. Parry commenced proceedings by showing the children clips and pictures from the well-known television programme, “The Great British Bake-Off” which certainly lit the spark for the day. After talking through how to stay safe around a kitchen, the children washed hands then got stuck in to the real messy stuff. Working in pairs, the children measured out their ingredients – 150g flour, 50g sugar and 50g butter – and made their balls of dough. The children then used rolling pins to flatten out their mixture before using biscuit cutters to create their biscuits and cookies.  Following 15 minutes of being the oven, our pupils got creative with their designs, adding coloured icing, sprinkles, chocolate and many other luxuries to their designs. Well done all; it was very successful DP Bake-Off!

GREEN GYM AT RODING

Some children in years 3-6 have been enjoying attending 'green gym' on a Friday lunchtime. They have been working really hard as a team to cut back lots of brambles and create a useable space for the whole school- whilst also remaining mindful and protecting the habitats of our woodland creatures! The children have been busy planting potato's and beetroot and have created a fantastic bug hotel- for all the mini-beasts to live. As a team, the children have big plans to create an outdoor reading area and re-vamp the bird watching area.

Good attendance is vital for the success of pupils and their wellbeing. It is widely known that poor attendance directly impacts on pupil's attainment not just now but in the long term. Life chances are reduced by poor attendance.

Did you know that 83.9% of pupils with 100% attendace in KS2 achieved the expected standard compared to only 40.2% of pupils who had attendance lower than 90%?  Please do work with us and ensure your child attends school regularly and on time. The school's target is 96%
