Dear families,

Welcome back to what will be a very short half-term!

It has been lovely to see the children return to school so positively, ready to learn and reconnect with their friends. Although the sunshine has only made a brief appearance, it has certainly lifted spirits and the days are beginning to feel noticeably longer. There is something about that late afternoon light that reminds us that spring (and eventually summer) is on its way. Let’s hope we continue to see more sunshine as the weeks pass, and we move closer to the Summer term.

It is hard to believe that we are now almost halfway through the academic year. The growth we are seeing in the children, not just academically, but socially and emotionally too, has been wonderful. From our youngest pupils gaining confidence and independence, to our older pupils demonstrating increasing resilience and maturity, there is so much to be proud of. Classrooms across the school remain purposeful and calm, and pupils continue to show enthusiasm for their learning.

You may remember that in my last newsletter I shared details about an exciting project Roding staff have taken part in – the Hemisphere Project. This initiative is designed to develop racial literacy and challenge racial bias, something we know is sadly prevalent in wider society. As a school, we are committed to ensuring that our children grow up in an environment rooted in respect, understanding and equity. I am pleased to share that our Governing Body is currently undertaking the same training. This demonstrates our collective commitment to ensuring that all members of our school community are informed, reflective and proactive in creating an inclusive culture. We are proud to be engaging in this important work together.

This week, we were also very fortunate to welcome our governors into school. They spent time speaking and eating with children, meeting with the leadership team and teachers, and visiting classrooms to see first-hand how learning takes place across the school. The feedback was extremely positive. Dawn Hallybone, Chair of Governors, shared that the governors found the day very valuable. She commented that it was a real privilege to see the fantastic work happening in every classroom and that they were made to feel welcome in every room they stepped into.

Dawn also spoke highly of our Pupil Leadership Team, including our Head Boy and Head Girl, describing them as a true testament to the school and the values we instil in our children. A particular highlight of the day was the opportunity to speak with them at length. Dawn shared that they are clearly very proud (and rightly so) to represent the school in this way. We are incredibly proud of them too!

This week has also been an especially exciting one for our pupils. We were fortunate to welcome a real-life author, Jeffrey Boakye, to Roding. The children were absolutely buzzing with excitement! Jeffrey delivered an inspiring assembly, speaking about his journey as a writer and the importance of reading, creativity and finding your voice. Many children brought copies of his books to be signed, and it was a joy to see their enthusiasm for literature so clearly on display. Opportunities like this truly help to bring reading to life and encourage our pupils to see themselves as future authors, poets and storytellers.

A gentle reminder that, from time to time, we may need to change dates or occasionally cancel events, although we always do everything possible to avoid this. When changes are necessary, we send out an updated version of the school’s Events Calendar. Please ensure you regularly check Arbor for the most up-to-date information so that you do not miss any important dates.

Looking ahead, we are very much looking forward to celebrating World Book Day on Thursday 5th March. Children are invited to come to school dressed as their favourite story character. We cannot wait to see the creativity on display! World Book Day is always a highlight of the year and reinforces our ongoing commitment to promoting a love of reading across the school.

I would also like to remind you that Parents' Evening will take place on Wednesday 18th March from 3:30pm.

Finally, I remain mindful that for many of our families this period marks the observance of Lent and Ramadan. These are important times of reflection, prayer and community. I would like to extend my warmest wishes to all those observing during this season.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support. I look forward to all that this short but busy half-term will bring.

Warmest wishes,

Ms M Nwankiti

Headteacher

JEFFREY BOAKYE VISITS RODING – BOOK SIGNING ASSEMBLY

We were delighted to welcome author Jeffrey Boakye to Roding this week for a very special assembly and book signing event. Jeffrey spoke to the children about his journey as a writer, the power of reading and the importance of finding your voice. His energy and passion truly inspired our pupils.

The children were buzzing with excitement throughout the day, and it was wonderful to see so many proudly holding signed copies of his books. Events like this play an important role in nurturing a love of reading and writing across our school.

SPORT AT RODING

It has been another fantastic month for the sporting stars of Roding!

We kicked off the year with the Year 6 football team starting their campaign to win the Redbridge 9-a-side Cup, where they faced Downshall. An impressive defensive display saw them secure a clean sheet, and goals from Harry, Elijah and Harris earned them a 5–0 victory and a place in the semi-finals!

Next, they faced Aldersbrook in the semi-finals, where they worked incredibly hard. Three early attempts went just wide of the goal, and unfortunately the match ended in defeat. They are now hoping to go on to win the 3rd place play-off next month.

Not only did they compete in the cup, they also began the 7-a-side league, which will see them play over three days against other Redbridge schools. Day 1 was a tough outing — the weather was cold and the pitch was wet — but nothing could wipe the smiles off their faces in their new football kits, purchased through our ‘Sports for Champions’ fundraising last year! With a mixture of wins, draws and losses, the team currently sit mid-table and are hoping to climb higher in the next stages in early March.

Year 6 also spent the day competing in the annual Redbridge Netball Tournament, where they played against 28 other teams from across the borough. We were fortunate to send two teams, both of whom progressed to the knockout stages in two different leagues. Team A sailed through to the knockouts with wins of 5–0, 4–0 and an impressive 8–1. Team B had a more challenging run; however, their first win came in the knockout stages and meant everything — they celebrated like it was their tenth! As the day went on, both teams reached their respective finals and narrowly missed out on lifting the trophies. Both teams returned home with silver medals and did us incredibly proud!

Look out, Year 5s — we will be inviting you to join us after Easter and are eagerly anticipating our Roding staff vs pupil match following last year’s success.

Last, but by no means least, we welcomed Roberto Lacourt to Roding for an educational assembly and fitness workshops before half-term. Roberto was inspirational in the way he spoke to the children, sharing the value of boxing for fitness, as well as the importance of control and resilience. We saw some of our students (and teachers!) up on stage, and the excitement carried on throughout the day. Every child participated in a fitness workshop delivered by Roberto alongside our fantastic sports ambassadors.

Not only did we have a fantastic day, but the Roding family also managed to raise an incredible £1,370! This money will go a long way in supporting young athletes both across the country and within our own school community. We thank you for your continued support.

Until next time…

Miss Goldberg (PE Lead)

A message from Head Boy – Emad Year 6

Hello, parents, My name is Emad, and I am the Head Boy at Roding Primary School. As Head Boy, I have big goals to achieve this academic year, including caring for our school and looking after our school grounds, both inside and outside. I also want to focus more on our school values so that we can proudly represent our Roding community.

I would like to think about ways to make our school an even better place to learn and grow. Not long ago, we had a conversation with our school governors, and I would really like to have more meetings with parents to show how great and fantastic our school is by sharing a child’s perspective.

A message from Head Girl – Darcey Year 6

Hello, my name is Darcey, and I am Head Girl of Roding. As Head Girl, I would like to meet and speak to parents and children who are planning on joining our school so I can show them how great Roding is from a child’s perspective.

As Head Girl, I have already met with the school governors to discuss our school grounds, both inside and out. For example, we would like to spread more wildlife throughout the mound, as we used to have a flower bed and a pond that are no longer there. We would now like to take more care of nature. Some children join a lunchtime club called Green Gym to help take care of the outside area.

Lastly, I would like to send a message to our school: In a world where you can be anything, choose to be kind. It will take you far!

WORLD BOOK DAY – THURSDAY 5TH MARCH

On Thursday, 5th March 2026, Roding Primary will be celebrating World Book Day, and we’re thrilled to invite you to join us in making it a memorable week of festivities! Below is an outline of the exciting activities we have planned.

Dressing Up as Your Favourite Book Character
We invite both staff and students to celebrate World Book Day by dressing up as their favourite character from a book. Please ensure that children can explain which book each character is from. It’s a fantastic opportunity to share your love of reading and to showcase your favourite literary heroes! Best costume in the class will receive a prize.

Get Caught Reading
Throughout the week, both staff and students are encouraged to take photos of themselves reading in unusual or surprising locations. Whether you’re on the bus, racing down a slide, hiding away in your bedroom, exploring the park, venturing into the school library, sharing stories at the dinner table, or even reading in the bathtub, let your imagination set off on a daring adventure. The best photo of the year group will receive a special prize, and all entries will be showcased during our World Book Day Assembly. We can’t wait to see where you’ve been “caught reading!”

Book Fair
The Roding Book Fair will kick off on Wednesday 4th March 2026, and will be set up in the school foyer at 3:15 PM. A timetable with scheduled slots for the children to visit and browse the books during the day will be shared with staff so that pupils can see which titles are on offer. After exploring the books, students will have the opportunity to purchase books after school during the book fair. It’s the perfect chance for our school community to support reading and explore new titles! Money raised at the Book Fair will help the school to buy new books for the library and classrooms. This will be a cash-free event, as all transactions will be made using a bank card.

Drop Everything and Read! – World Book Day
Please ensure your child brings a book to school on World Book Day. When pupils hear the bell, it will be time to Drop Everything and Read! for 30 minutes. This special session is designed to encourage a love of reading and help pupils enjoy books in a fun and imaginative way. Teachers will be taking part too, so pupils can see adults modelling their own enjoyment of reading.

Book Swap
To celebrate World Book Day, each class will have a dedicated book swap box, giving pupils the chance to bring in a book they no longer need and exchange it for a new one to enjoy.

World Book Day Competitions: Glass Jar or Bookmark
As part of our World Book Day celebrations, we will be running an exciting competition: A World Book Day themed Glass Jar or Bookmark. The glass jar idea is inspired by Roald Dahl’s The BFG, in which the BFG collects dreams in glass jars. Additionally, for those who would like to express their creativity in a different way, they can design a World Book Day bookmark to encourage others to read. The deadline for entries is World Book Day, with winners announced on the same day. Winners will be selected from across the school.
