Dear families,

As we reach the end of this short half-term, I find myself reflecting on the vibrant energy that has filled our school halls and grounds. The coming weeks promise to be a whirlwind of activity, brimming with celebrations, transitions, and cherished traditions. I urge you all to keep a keen eye on our events calendar, as it's packed with important dates and times you won't want to miss.

In these glorious summer months, I'm reminded of how truly blessed we are with our school's expansive grounds. Having grown up in inner London and taught primarily in city schools, I appreciate the unique opportunity our pupils have to connect with nature right on their doorstep. Recently, we've been treated to an array of wildlife visitors on our field, including foxes, muntjac deer, and badgers. Thanks to the cameras set up by Mr O'Sullivan and Mrs Sangha, we've captured these magical moments for all to enjoy. Their dedication to enriching our pupils' outdoor experiences is truly commendable.

Speaking of the outdoors, I'm thrilled to announce that we've reinstated forest learning for our Reception children. We firmly believe in the power of outdoor learning to ignite curiosity, foster resilience, and nurture a deep connection with the natural world. It's our mission to ensure our pupils have ample opportunities to learn beyond the confines of classroom walls.

Now, let's celebrate some recent achievements. Our Year 6 pupils recently sat their SATs, demonstrating remarkable resilience and focus. They concluded their assessments with a well-deserved pizza party - but more on that later!

I'm also delighted to share that our first BSL workshop for parents was an overwhelming success. The feedback has been nothing short of phenomenal, prompting us to explore ways to offer these workshops more regularly. It's heartening to see our community embracing inclusivity and expanding their communication skills.

Looking ahead, I want to prepare you for more statutory assessments after the half-term break. Our Year 1 pupils will be taking the Phonics screening check, while Year 4 will tackle the Multiplication check. Non-statutory assessments will also be conducted across other year groups.

As the weather changes, I'd like to remind you that pupils are welcome to wear their summer uniforms. However, please note that sunglasses are not permitted unless there's a medical reason, which should be communicated to the office. On warmer days, we kindly ask that you apply sunscreen to your child before they come to school.

Before I sign off, a crucial reminder: Monday 2nd June is an INSET day, and the school will be closed to all pupils. We look forward to welcoming everyone back on Tuesday 3rd June at 8:30am for the final exciting half-term of this academic year.

As always, I'm filled with pride when I think of our Roding Primary School community. Your continued support and engagement make our school a truly special place. Here's to a fantastic end to the school year, filled with learning, laughter, and unforgettable memories.

Wishing you all a restful half-term break.

Ms M Nwankiti

Sharing the Joy of Reading Across the World

We are proud to share that Roding Primary School has recently donated a number of books to Kalmunai Sinhala Maha Vidyalaya, a school in Sri Lanka. This wonderful initiative helps support children’s education beyond our local community, spreading the joy of reading to those who need it most.

A huge thank you to Miss De Silva Anthony for organising the donation and helping to make a positive difference across the globe. It’s inspiring to see our school values in action on an international level!

Well done, Team Roding – a brilliant example of giving back and thinking beyond borders.

On Wednesday 18th June, Roding will be taking part in this year's Science Day!

We would like to remind and encourage your children to dress as their favourite Scientist! There is no expectation for families to spend money or buy a brand new costume, instead we encourage you to use what you already have at home. Be as creative and fun as possible! Please speak to your class teacher if you have any questions about this.

Ask your children to think about which Scientists and inventors inspire them or who they've learned about this year at school that they've found interesting. To help kick-start your inspiration, here is a list of Scientists taught in our curriculum!

Year One: Christopher Wren, Jeanne Villepreux-Power, Ole Kirk Christiansen, Jane Colden

Year Two: John McAdam, Maria Beasley, David Attenborough, Louis Pasteur, Mary Seacole

Year Three: Marie Curie, Mary Anning, William Gilbert, Garret Morgan, Marianne North

Year Four: Lewis Latimer, Miller Reese Hutchison, Elsie Widdowson, Joseph Priestly, Rachel Carson,

Year Five: Mae Jemison, Isaac Newton, George Washington Carver, Reza Montazami, Ralph Braun

Year Six: Ḥasan Ibn al-Haytham (Alhazen), Nikola Tesla, Rosalind Franklin, Carl Linnaeus, Marie Maynard Daly

RODING FOOTBALL TEAM VICTORY 8–1

After a tough start to the season, the Year 6 Football Team had their first win, and was it a win! The game kicked off on the field against local rivals, Fullwood Primary, with friends and families watching on. A quick start meant that we were one goal up after minutes and the goals continued from there. Some fantastic goals from Praise, Rohan, Janhangir and Aydin and a brilliant defensive display at the back meant that Roding finished the game 8 - 1 and feeling very proud of themselves. A fantastic performance from the team, who are eager to get underway with their next match after the half term. Well done Team!

NETBALL MATCH - STAFF VS YEAR 6 NETBALL TEAM

A few Fridays ago, children and adults enjoyed an ice lolly in the hope of raising money for Year 6 celebrations, and we saw our first ever Staff versus Year 6 Netball Match. The competition was fierce, and the teachers were desperate to show they still have what it takes. Miss Goldberg had the hard job of umpiring the match, with pushing and shoving very evident from the teachers' team, but we did see some fantastic goals from Mrs Schneider and Mrs Hunte, with the best goal of the match coming from Lucy. The teachers were triumphant and won 5-2, but the excitement is set to continue. Daisey (6G) has asked to petition for a rematch - with teachers not cheating! Let's hope she is successful, and we will see the rematch take place before they set off for secondary school.

A huge thanks to the staff who joined; Mr Hall, Mr Calnan, Mrs Moeed, Miss Daly, Miss O'Connor, Mrs Hunte and Mrs Schneider as well as Mr O'Sullivan for his umpiring support.

5-STAR FOOD HYGIENE RATING AT RODING

A food hygiene rating of 5 stars for a school three times in a row indicates exceptionally high standards of food safety and hygiene practices. This means that the school's food handling, storage, preparation, and cleanliness of facilities consistently meet the very good standards set by the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

STAFF SPOTLIGHT - NEIL PARRY

Hello! I’m Mr Parry, and I’m incredibly proud to say that I have worked at Roding for the last nine academic years here as a teacher – starting at Roding all the way back in January 2017.

I began at Roding working as a class teacher, teaching both in Year 3 and Year 5. Since September 2018, I have worked within the Deaf Provision here as a Teacher of the Deaf. I have also been the school’s Computing Curriculum Lead since September 2019 and, more recently, been Co-Lead for both our brilliant Inspirational Choir and exceptional Signing Choir.

I have always thoroughly enjoyed working at Roding. Our local community is a wonderful embodiment of kindness, togetherness and support, and I have always been proud of our wonderful children here at Roding.

Originally from Liverpool (you can just about tell from my waning accent), I moved to Leeds in 1999 to study Multimedia and Music before moving down to London in 2005. For many years, I worked as a musician, travelling around the UK performing and recording.

However, I saw the light of the teaching profession in 2011 and began my teacher training at a school in Kings Cross – which is also where I lived at the time.

My wife and I moved to Walthamstow in 2013 where I worked at a school there. Since then, we have had three wonderful children and are now settled in a nice, quiet(ish) area between the hustle and bustle of Walthamstow and Highams Park.

Life at Roding is, and has always been, a busy ride. Every day is full of challenges but is also extremely fun and rewarding. In particular, as well as working alongside our wonderful support staff at Roding, working closely with the families of our Deaf children is what I find an extremely rewarding and important job. It is, and has always been, a pleasure to serve our families and work with your children.

I have also been incredibly proud to be co-leading our school choirs since the beginning of this academic year too. It’s made my own personal musical journey feel like it has come full circle, and I am now, in some way, passing the baton on with my passion for songwriting, music structures and lyric writing. It really is a special thing to be a part of at the school. There are big plans for the future of music at Roding.

I am always happy to chat with anyone throughout the school day, so do not hesitate to come over and say “Hi!” after you have read this – if you’ve made it this far!
