April Newsletter 2024

Dear families,

We would like to take this opportunity to welcome you all back after the Easter break! We have only been in school for two weeks in April so this newsletter will be shorter than usual.

Spring is a time of renewal and growth, and it's no different here at Roding. We are thrilled to see our children flourishing academically, creatively, and socially. As we enter the final stretch of the school year, let's continue to support and encourage each other in our shared commitment to ensuring our children get the very best education.

Many of you may already be aware but we are delighted to announce that Miss Nwankiti has been appointed as the new full-time Headteacher of Roding Primary School effective from the 1st June. With Miss Nwankiti's appointment as Headteacher, we are now actively recruiting for the position of Deputy Headteacher, who will join our leadership team in September 2024. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced educator and leader to contribute to the ongoing success and development of our school.

We have already made a strong start to the new half term with cycling training taking place for Years 2, 3 and 4 this week. It has been an exciting time for the children and now that the sun is finally out, more learning will naturally take place outside. Watch this space!

We would like to take this opportunity to wish our Jewish families a joyous passover filled with peace and inspiration.

Do not forget to check out the UPDATED school events calendar which will be emailed to you soon.

Information for Year 5 Parents

The 11 plus exam for 2025 entrance will be held on Friday 20 September 2024 – this is the second year we are testing on a weekday as last year was a success. Children who sit the test will be given an authorised absence from primary school.

Registration will open on 1 May and will close at 5pm on 15 June 2024 – this is a strict deadline. It is not possible to register before or after these dates. The registration period is shorter this month, please ensure your parents are aware!

Parents must register their child when they are in Year 5 during the above registration dates on the following link. Children will sit this exam when they are in Year 6: Redbridge - Redbridge 11 Plus

Please note that the test is based on a child’s natural ability (meaning there is no demand that a child must be tutored for this test) and there is also no fee for a child to sit this test. It is free!

If parents would like further information, please direct them to the following link: Redbridge - Redbridge 11 Plus

The registration link will be added to this page on 1 May 2024.

This information will also be available on Redbridge social pages on Twitter and Facebook closer to the registration period.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT- REGGIE RODING

Hi my name is Reggie Roding, and I am 2 years old. I am so glad that I get to take part in the Staff Spotlight this month as I strongly believe that I am one of the most important staff members here!

In case you are not aware, I first visited Roding when I was still a puppy at only 4 months old. Mrs Radmore and Ms Nwankiti fell in love with me straight away and offered me the job! They did say at the time that I would have one of the most important roles in the school.

Every morning, my grandPAWrent wakes me up at 6am. I have to admit, I am not too fond of this, and sometimes I give her a hard time. I don't have to get dressed as I was born wearing a fur coat, but if I am not in the mood, it can take some time to get me through the front door.

I love being at Roding once I am here. I love reading and spending time with children. They always greet me with smiles, hugs and the occasional treat. I also really enjoy seeing all the parents and staff here as well. I shouldn't have favourites but Miss Bundac really does do a great job of walking me and looking after me when I am here. One of the best things about me is that I can make children laugh, but I also have the very important job of cheering them up if they are feeling sad too.

Here's a little bit more about me. I love food - ALOT! I can be a little bit stubborn. I enjoy short walks and I absolutely HATE the rain.

Don't forget to say hi when you see me around!

Year 2 are really enjoying cycle training this week. They are becoming a lot more confident on their bikes. We are very fortunate at Roding to have a set of bikes that we use for children to support with training as well.

Cycle Confident are working in partnership with Roding. Together, we really want to support as many pupils as possible to be confident cyclers so that they can work towards leading healthy, active lives! Learning in the Spotlight - Art

Year 1 have been learning about the seaside.

"Today, during our Art lesson, we were sculptors and used tools to manipulate clay to create seaside sculptures. We were careful to mould the clay into a circle first. We then used the palms of our hands to flatten the shape into a circle before sculpting our design. Once they are dry, we are going to paint them."

Respect for our staff - A polite notice

Over the past few weeks, we have noticed instances where parents and carers' interactions with staff have been less than respectful.

We understand that frustrations and stress can sometimes lead to moments where we may not act as we should. However, it's crucial to remember that the individuals who work at Roding deserve to be treated with kindness and respect. They are doing their jobs, often going above and beyond, to ensure the school runs smoothly.

Being rude or disrespectful not only reflects poorly on you but also has a negative impact on the atmosphere around us. It can create tension and discomfort for everyone involved. Additionally, it's important to lead by example, especially when children are present.

We are not writing this to scold or criticise, but rather to remind all of our families of the importance of empathy and compassion in our interactions. Let's strive to communicate our concerns or frustrations in a calm and respectful manner, understanding that everyone deserves to be heard and treated with decency.

We believe that by working together to be more mindful of our behaviour, we can create a more positive and harmonious environment for ourselves and those around us.

Good attendance is vital for the success of pupils and their wellbeing. It is widely known that poor attendance directly impacts on pupil's attainment not just now but in the long term. Life chances are reduced by poor attendance.

Did you know that 83.9% of pupils with 100% attendace in KS2 achieved the expected standard compared to only 40.2% of pupils who had attendance lower than 90%?  Please do work with us and ensure your child attends school regularly and on time. The school's target is 96%
