February Newsletter 2024

Dear families,

How wonderful is it that we now have the school newsletter up and running again! We are so happy that we can share content with you which showcases the exciting learning that takes place at Roding every day. This newsletter will be released once a month, at the end of each month.

If you haven’t already, please do check out our brand new school website (www.rodingprimary.co.uk) which again, will give you an insight into the wonderful things taking place at Roding. Our website continues to develop so if you feel there is something missing then please do contact the office to let us know.

We can't quite believe that we have reached the end of Spring half term which means that we are almost half way through the academic school year. We cannot wait to see what the next half of the year brings.

Enjoy your half term when it comes and we look forward to welcoming you back to school on Monday 26th February.

Do not forget to check out the UPDATED school events calendar which will be emailed to you soon.

Mrs H Radmore and Ms M Nwankiti

Thank you to all the children who contributed to the Spring 1 Home Learning Showcase! There was some fanstastic examples of learning created at home and supported by parents. It was great to see learning around The Stone Age, Brazil, Chinese New Year and so much more! Don't forget to look out for the next Home Learning Showcase in March!

STAFF SPOTLIGHT - MR ASHWELL

Hi my name is Mr Ashwell and I have worked at Roding Primary School for nearly 10 years! That’s a long time if I do say so myself. Every morning, I wake up at 4:45am and start opening the school at 5:30am in the morning. I do this to make sure the school is safe enough for the cleaning team. Throughout the day, my main role is to check and make sure the school is safe enough for children, staff and visitors.

My title is Site Manager so that means I am responsible for the health and safety of the site along with security however, I do a lot of other things as well. My favourite thing about working at Roding is interacting and talking to people - it is never boring at Roding! Most of the children also make me smile, even the ones who support West Ham!

Reception and Nursery had a great time when Zoolab visited the school. Creepy crawlies may not be a firm favourite for everyone but the children really loved them!

Year 3 are holding a bake/cultural foods sale to raise money for the Year 3 trip to Valence House Museum.

The money raised will support us in reducing the cost of the trip.

Food sale: Tuesday 27th February 2024 at 3.15pm

Location: bandstand

To the Roding Community,

On Friday 2nd February, we were visited by Paralympian Lawrence Whitely who works for SPORTS FOR CHAMPIONS. He spoke to the children about his journey as an athlete and set up a fitness circuit for the children to complete.

The children have worked so hard getting sponsored and raised £1,231! We have had children doing 30 press ups, 100 star jumps and even running a mile to raise the money. Well done everyone!

It has been amazing to see our community work with our children to help raise money for the charity but also the school. We would not have been able to do it without the generosity and support of the parents and carers of this school so thank you very much from myself and all the staff.

We do get a percentage of the funds raised and Miss Butt as PE lead, has decided to spend the money on sports equipment for the children to use during playtimes and lunchtimes.

Good attendance is vital for the success of pupils and their wellbeing. It is widely known that poor attendance directly impacts on pupil's attainment not just now but in the long term. Life chances are reduced by poor attendance.

Did you know that 83.9% of pupils with 100% attendace in KS2 achieved the expected standard compared to only 40.2% of pupils who had attendance lower than 90%?  Please do work with us and ensure your child attends school regularly and on time. The school's target is 96%

At Roding Primary School, our school council is a group of children that represents the views of all our pupils. It gives our children the opportunity to have their voices heard and be part of the whole school community. They help to makes decisions about school life and organise projects that support learning and development, such as organising charity events, theme days or representing the school at outside events.

We value the opinions of our pupils and our school council gives pupils a forum to share these opinions with our school council teacher representative,               Co-headteachers and other members of staff.

Who are the School Council representatives?

A new school council is elected each year and is made up of 2 representatives from each class from Year 1 to Year 6. All school council representatives are elected by their peers at the beginning of each academic year.

Children in Year 6 have been studying the viral image 'The Great Wave' by Hokusai and reflecting on what made it go viral. They recognise art as a 'universal language' making it a powerful way to share messages. The children have created their own version of 'The Great Wave'  sharing their concerns about the world we live in: global warming, climate change, deforestation and pollution.

Well done to our budding young artists below: Henry, Jai, Sejuti and Dennis

We are really sad to have to report that we have had a high number of complaints from our neighbours living on Owen Gardens Road. You will be aware that this is not the first time that we have brought this to your attention and we are really disappointed that some families do not care about the reputation of our/your school. The neighbours are reporting that families are littering, parking cars across drive ways and are speeding. What is most upsetting is that they are reporting that some children, along with their parents, are showing very little respect for their property with some neighbours reporting repeated damage to bricks outside their houses. This is unacceptable and the community police may issue you a fine. Please consider parking further away or walking to school where possible.

If this continues, we may have to consider closing the gate at Owen Gardens to ensure the safety of the children and the respect for our neighbours' property.
