SATS week is nearly here….

The children in Year 6 have all worked really hard over the last few months, practising their skills in all subjects, in preparation for the exams. We are so proud of the children for their continued efforts and hard work and would like to wish them all the luck in the world for next week.

We hope they all have a relaxed and chilled out weekend and are ready to be the best they can be, ready for the week ahead.

Good luck to you all, Year 6, we know you can do it!!!!

Miss Henderson, Mrs Wilson, Mrs Wooton, Miss Balkwill, Mrs Winward and Mrs Read.

A tasty treat at Ilford County High School

On Monday 15 of us from Year 6 were privileged to be invited along to Ilford County High school, to experience a Home Economics lesson, making yummy and healthy muffins. We were made very welcome by the staff and some of the pupils from the school and had a great morning learning about health and safety in the kitchen, what equipment to use and how to use it safely and how to use an oven safely. We even had to do the washing up afterwards!!!!! We were allowed to take our healthy, blueberry and mango muffins back with us to eat after our lunch. A great morning was had by all.

Our new topic-Australia…G’day mate!!

The topic this half term, is Australia. During the Easter holidays, the children were asked, as homework, to make a model, research a subject of interest or design a leaflet about Australia. The children must have worked really hard during their holidays, as the results, as you can see from the pictures below, were just FANTASTIC!!!

Our busy two weeks!

R.E roleplay!

The Christian Project from the Broadmead Baptiste church came in on Monday to help us understand the week of Easter from different characters points of view. First they showed us a powerpoint of the Easter story, then we had to write an eyewitness account of certain events. Yr 6 now understand the Easter story so well that if you ask any pupil to retell it, you could be standing there for a good few minutes! Thank you Christian Project for giving us such a good time and helping us understand the Easter story so well, no thanks to the teachers ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

Our busy two weeks!

Tate Modern!

The whole of Yr 6 travelled through London to get to the Tate Modern facing St. Pauls’ Cathedral on the opposite side of the river. The Tate Modern was excellent, with lots of amazing modern art, some of which made you think very hard about the paintings message of feeling, what the painting was supposed to be, and why the artist had created it. The whole of Yr 6 had an amazing day, and hope they can have another awesome journey again soon!

Our busy two weeks!

Skateboards!

Last week, Yr 6 enjoyed the sunshine as we finished our Cool Stuff project- our modern skateboards! We painted both sides and added a cool modern design i.e. cool arrows, text talk, hobbies and interests and a lot more! Because of the sun, the skateboards dried quickly and they look amazing!

Fantastic Netball success!

This week the team had two matches in the Redbridge Primary Schools Netball League. . Playing against St Augustine’s we were 3 goals behind but managed to catch up and finish 8 – 8.  We also played against Fairlop in our best game of the season and won 19 – 3! Fantastic effort from all the girls – Sophie Daly, Georgia Ayton, Megan Belcher, Shannay Reid, Molly Hassan, Caitlin Hubert, Jade Nightingale and Tia Waldren.  Also many thanks to the parents for getting the girls to Redbridge Leisure Centre and for their very vocal support. Finally many thanks also to Mrs Davey for wonderful umpiring. This means we have finished the season mid table. Well done and looking forward to the summer tournament.  Welcome also to the year 4 children who have just joined Netball Club its great to see so much enthusiasm.

Skateboards!!!

6H, as part of our Cool Stuff topic, made skateboards with modern and original designs. We cut out cardboard ovals in the shape of skateboards and painted them white on one side. We then left them to dry and then drew our designs onto paper. Once our boards had dried, we copied our designs onto them in pencil so we could have a rough idea of the shapes. We painted them one colour at a time and we used care and handled the brushes with extreme cautionn as we really wanted these skateboards to turn out right. After three art lessons many of us had completed our skateboards and were imensely proud of them. 6H had a great time and thought it had been the best art lesson so far closely followed by the graffiti. We hope that the next Yr 6 class/es will have as much fun as we did!

Year 6 visit the Design Museum…..

Year 6 went on a trip to the Design Museum. 6H went on Friday the 2nd of March and 6w went on Wednesday the 7th of March. We took the tube to London and walked over Tower Bridge which was an amazing experience. In the Design Museum we saw the Olympic torch, the design for an electric powered car, and an improved X-box, some futuristic fashion dress designs and much much more! Yr 6 had an amazing time and even got to design our own futuristic products in a workshop on the top floor. It was a phenominal experience and Yr 6 wished they could do it again.

Cool Stuff project-Totally cool!!!

On Friday the ninth of March, six children from Yr 6, three from each class( Matthew Wood, Caitlin Hulbert, me-Lauren Heskey, Sam Collins, Charlie Jeakins and Joseph Roberts), went to Ilford County High School to take part in a science competition. The challenge was we had to make an elastic band powered car that can climb gradients. The car had to be under 20-30 cm and powered by ONE elastic band as its’ sole source of power.

We had two whole days to work on an idea, but we spent one day making prototypes so that we knew what we were doing. We experimented with different wheels, frames and bands and in the end we settled for mine and Matthews’ design. Our car still had flaws so I took it home to make a few alterations. The car was finished on Sunday and I tested it out on a flat surface and the car flew an amazing 10m!!!

I took it to school on Monday to test it out on a slope. It went up a slope 30cm high. We all knew that this was the car that gave us the best chance of winning. We made some posters to show how we made our model and stuck on some pictures of the team and the cars’ construction. After a bit of a painting and some oiling of the hooks, our car was ready to go.

We arrived at Ilford County and saw our competitors. We were against 4 other teams all from the same school. We wound up our car and set it on the bottom of the slope which was 12 cm high. It faltered at first ,gathered speed and then…flew off the end! We were automatically through to the next round. We sailed through two rounds and by the third, we were head to head against only one other team as the others had knocked themselves out. We both passed through to the fourth round where it was a close shave. The other team just fell short of the line. But we, unfortunatley, didn’t get any where near that…we completely flew off the end!!!! The other team had two more goes but fell short each time, so Roding were the clear winners!!!! We had a great day as it was quite competitive, but we had great fun just joining in. Well done to the runners-up and the other teams who participated as they put in a lot of effort and time. We had a great time and wished we could do it again!!!!
